Splinters, Logs, Pigs & Dogs

1. Be a Witness not a Judge

1 “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use.  Matthew 7:1–2

2. Check Yourself before You Wreck Someone Else

3 Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye.  Matthew 7:3–5

3. Know When to Speak & to be Quiet

6 Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.

Do I have a Critical Heart?

  • Taking the place of God?
  • Quick to call out sin, slow to confess my own.
  • Using my own measurement to judge but not applying it to myself?
  • Do I spend more time diagnosing others than examining myself?

Do I have a Crusader Heart?

  • Trying to Save everyone and Fix Everything
  • Burning out b/c I’ve taken on the Holy Spirit’s job
  • Am I controlling everything instead of trusting Jesus?

Do I have a Complacent Heart?

  • I don’t judge, I don’t discern, don’t make waves.
  • I don’t have real discipleship conversations
  • Am I more concerned with my comfort than conviction?
  • Am I afraid of conflict?

Do I have Christ’s Heart?

  • Am I seeing you the way that Jesus sees you?
  • Is my heart connected to the humility and example of Jesus?
  • Am I responding to you the way that Jesus responds to me?
