Only Two Roads
In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus simplifies life's most important decision to just two options: a wide gate leading to destruction or a narrow gate leading to life. The wide gate, chosen by many, represents conforming to the world and living life on our own terms. It's spacious enough to bring all our baggage through and doesn't require self-reflection or confronting our selfishness. We naturally gravitate toward this path because it offers comfort over conviction. The narrow gate, found by few, represents salvation through Jesus and complete surrender. It demands everything to get through, requiring us to leave behind our entitlement, reputation, and self-righteousness. This path continues to form us to look more like Jesus, challenging our agenda, pace, and desire for control. Many who think they're on the narrow road through good behavior are actually on a smaller lane of the wide road. True navigation of the narrow path requires complete dependence on Jesus. While our culture views this exclusivity as restrictive, it's actually about value—like the beautiful commitment of marriage. Choosing the narrow gate means surrendering our lives fully to Jesus, leaving certain things behind for the incomparable reward of true life.
