Prayers you can pray today

Start with Scripture, then pray it in your own words. These are simple places to begin, whatever you're facing.

A prayer for healing

Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise.

Jeremiah 17:14

Jesus, You healed the sick who came to You, and You are the same today. I bring You my body, and the people I love who are hurting.

Touch what medicine can’t reach. Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses caring for us, and give me peace while I wait. I ask You boldly for healing, and I trust You with what comes next.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for anxiety and worry

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7

Father, my mind won’t slow down. I’m handing You the things I keep turning over, one at a time. You already know what tomorrow holds, and I don’t need to.

Guard my heart and my mind with Your peace, the kind that doesn’t make sense on paper. When the worry comes back, remind me that You are holding it.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for strength

He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak.

Isaiah 40:29

God, I’m tired, and I don’t have much left. You give power to the faint, so I’m asking for Yours.

Carry me through today, one hour at a time. Help me rest when I can and keep going when I have to. Let my strength come from You and not from how I feel.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for peace

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

John 14:27

Jesus, You said You leave Your peace with us. I need it right now.

Quiet the noise in my head and in my home. Where there is conflict, bring calm. Where there is fear, bring trust. Let Your peace settle over me and stay.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for protection

The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121:7–8

Lord, You watch over my coming and going. Cover me and the people I love today: on the road, at work, at school, wherever we are.

Keep us from harm and from evil. When I’m afraid, help me remember that You never sleep and You never look away.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer when you’re grieving

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.

Psalm 34:18

God, my heart is broken. I miss them more than I can say. You are near to the brokenhearted, so come near to me.

Hold me through the hard days and the quiet nights. Thank You for the life we shared. Give me comfort for today and hope for the day You make all things new.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer when your heart is heavy

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:11

God, I feel low, and I can’t always explain why. Lift my head. Remind me that my story isn’t over and that You haven’t left.

Send people who will sit with me, and give me the courage to reach out to them. Fill me with Your hope again.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

If you’re thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 any time, day or night. In an emergency, call 911.

A prayer for guidance

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

James 1:5

Father, I have a decision in front of me and I can’t see the way. You promised wisdom to anyone who asks, so I’m asking.

Close the doors I shouldn’t walk through and open the right ones. Help me trust You more than my own understanding, and give me peace about the next step.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for your family

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!

Joshua 24:15

God, I lift up my family to You, each one by name. Heal what’s broken between us and protect what’s good.

Help us be patient, forgive quickly and laugh together. Draw every one of us closer to You.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for your marriage

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:12

Lord, thank You for my spouse. Be the third strand in our marriage.

Where we’ve drifted, draw us back together. Soften our words, help us listen, and give us grace for each other. Make our home a place of love and faith.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for provision

And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

Father, You know what we need before we ask. Money is tight, and I’m worried about it.

Provide for my family: work, open doors, and the bills in front of us. Give me wisdom with what I have and a generous heart with it. I trust You as my provider.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for someone who doesn’t know Jesus

The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9

God, I pray for someone I love who doesn’t know You yet. You love them even more than I do.

Open their eyes to who Jesus is. Put people in their path who will point them to You, and give me the right words and patience when it’s my turn. Draw them home.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for forgiveness

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

Father, I’ve done things I’m not proud of, and I confess them to You now. Thank You that Jesus paid for my sin and that You are faithful to forgive.

Wash me clean. Then help me forgive the people who have hurt me, the way You have forgiven me.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A morning prayer

Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

Lamentations 3:22–23

Good morning, Lord. Thank You for this new day and for mercies that are new again.

I give You my plans, my conversations and my worries. Lead me today. Help me see the people around me the way You see them, and let my life point to Jesus.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer before sleep

I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8

Lord, thank You for carrying me through today. I lay down what I couldn’t finish and what I couldn’t fix.

Quiet my mind and give my body rest. Watch over my home tonight, and wake me ready for whatever tomorrow brings.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

How to pray

Prayer is talking with God. You don't need special words. Jesus gave us a pattern to follow.

  1. Be honest. Tell God what's really going on. He already knows, and He cares for you.
  2. Pray Scripture. Read a verse, then pray it back to God in your own words.
  3. Don't pray alone. "Pray for each other so that you may be healed" (James 5:16). Ask others to pray with you.

When you don't have words, that's OK. "The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words" (Romans 8:26).

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
