John 16:13-15

Get Uncomfortable, Meet the Comforter

Jay Miura, July 5, 2026, 48 min

Sometimes God moves us out of our comfort zone so we learn to depend on the Holy Spirit. In John 16:13-15, Jesus promises the Spirit of truth, who guides us into all truth, tells us what is yet to come and glorifies Jesus through us. Simple obedience to his promptings opens doors we could never open ourselves.

Message notes

Pastor Jay Miura and his wife, Ayako, open by thanking the church a year after moving to Kanazawa, Japan, as missionaries. Pastor Jay grew up right here and spent 40 years in this neighborhood. He tells how he didn’t realize he needed glasses until he couldn’t read a street sign on the mainland. In Hawaii he never looked at the signs. Familiar places can lull us into a sleepy rhythm, and “sometimes the Lord, he has to get us out of our comfort zone for the Comforter to come.”

He turns to John 16, part of Jesus’ farewell words to his disciples. The Holy Spirit has many names: the Paraclete, the helper, the comforter, the advocate. Here Jesus calls him the Spirit of truth, who guides us into all truth. Pastor Jay says he has never relied on the Spirit more than in this past year. Plans and partners fell through when they arrived, and none of their five kids spoke Japanese. With no one to call, they asked the Spirit for help, and he led them to the school principal. Their testimony opened the school’s doors to the family.

The Spirit’s job is to reveal Jesus, and Pastor Jay learned that Jesus carries a father’s heart for our families. In the first year, God told them to take care of their family, spend time with him and get to know the community. Pastor Jay calls it a fight to stop trying to build a church and be the church to his family first. They kept daily devotions with five kids every morning and began praying about “each one reach one”: every person reaching one person a year.

Growth comes through discomfort, like the gym. The Spirit also gives “insider information.” After a mission team spent days picking frozen apples off the ground, one apple at a time, on a farm damaged by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, God told Pastor Jay to stop worrying about what was next and go to his son’s basketball game. In broken Japanese, he talked with the coach, a fishmonger, who mentioned that the restaurant across the street had just closed. It became the family’s new cafe and ministry space.

Finally, the Spirit glorifies Jesus through obedient people. Before they moved, the kids prayed too, because the Spirit in them “is not a junior Holy Spirit.” Pastor Jay shares how teachers and classmates noticed his children. He closes by inviting people to say yes to Jesus, and asks believers to deal with any delayed obedience.

From the message

Sometimes the Lord, he has to get us out of our comfort zone for the Comforter to come and do what he has come to do.

It was such a fight to not go and build a church and start doing this, but actually start being the church to my family first.

The person of the Holy Spirit, he’s got some insider information for you, and he’s going to tell you exactly what to do.

The Holy Spirit that lives in them is not a junior Holy Spirit. He’s the big guy himself.

Get Uncomfortable, Meet the Comforter, John 16:13-15. July 5, 2026.

Start here

Where is a place you know so well that you could get around it without looking at a single sign?

Read John 16:13-15

Open your Bibles and read it out loud together before you start.

What does it say?

  1. In John 16:13, what does Jesus call the Holy Spirit, and what three things does he say the Spirit will do?

  2. According to John 16:14-15, whom does the Spirit glorify, and where does what he makes known come from?

What does it mean?

  1. Pastor Jay said the Spirit’s main job is to reveal Jesus, not to do “spooky stuff.” Why does it matter that the Spirit points us to Jesus?

  2. Jesus speaks of the Spirit as the helper, the advocate and the Spirit of truth in John 14-16. Which of those names do you most need right now, and why?

  3. Why do you think discomfort, like a workout, is often where spiritual growth happens?

What do we do with it?

  1. Pastor Jay said the Spirit’s first assignment for his family was to care for each other, spend time with God and get to know their neighbors. What would being the church to your own family look like this week?

  2. Who could be your one this year: one person you pray for, share Jesus with and walk alongside?

  3. Is there a prompting you have delayed obeying because it feels uncomfortable? What is one step you could take on it before next Sunday?

Pray

Thank the Holy Spirit for being your helper, comforter and guide. Ask him to show you the next step of obedience you have been putting off, and pray for courage to take it, and for the Miura family’s work in Kanazawa.
